Microsoft’s New Surface Has a Different Kind of Chip
As of Friday, October 9, 2026, the Surface Laptop Ultra is no longer just a future-looking Surface concept. Microsoft opened preorders on October 7, with availability expected to begin on October 16. The big shift is inside: instead of leaning on Intel, AMD, or Qualcomm silicon, this flagship Surface is built around Nvidia RTX Spark, a platform that combines an Nvidia Grace CPU, Blackwell RTX graphics, an NPU, and unified memory in one system design. That makes the Surface Laptop Ultra feel less like a normal Windows laptop refresh and more like Microsoft’s attempt to build a premium, tightly integrated machine for creators, developers, AI builders, and power users who have been watching Apple’s MacBook Pro strategy from the Windows side. RTX Spark Is the Main Story
The Surface Laptop Ultra comes in two Nvidia RTX Spark N1X processor options: one with an 18-core CPU and 5,120-core Blackwell RTX GPU, and another with a 20-core CPU and 6,144-core Blackwell RTX GPU. Memory options include 24GB, 32GB, 48GB, 64GB, or 128GB of LPDDR5x unified memory, while storage starts with a 512GB removable Gen 4 SSD and goes up to 1TB or 2TB removable Gen 5 SSD configurations. Microsoft says select configurations can deliver up to 1 petaflop of peak FP4 AI compute, but that is a theoretical AI figure, not an independent benchmark or a general performance claim. The more practical angle is the shared memory pool: CPU, GPU, and AI workloads can draw from the same memory system, which is useful for local models, large creative files, 3D scenes, development tools, and AI experimentation. A 15-Inch Surface Built for Heavy Work
Microsoft is keeping the Surface Laptop Ultra in a single 15-inch class rather than offering a 14-inch and 16-inch split like Apple. The display is a 15-inch PixelSense Ultra touchscreen with a 3270 x 2180 resolution, 3:2 aspect ratio, 262 PPI, up to 120Hz dynamic refresh rate, 100% DCI-P3 color, Dolby Vision IQ support, and a listed 2,000-nit peak HDR brightness. The chassis measures 12.95 x 9.40 inches, is 0.71 inches thick without feet, and weighs 4.41 pounds. Microsoft lists battery life at up to 15 hours of local video playback or 12 hours of active web usage, though those figures come from controlled Microsoft testing with preproduction hardware and will vary by workload. Ports, Charging, and the MacBook Pro Comparison
The MacBook Pro comparison is hard to miss, but Microsoft is not copying Apple point for point. The Surface Laptop Ultra includes three USB-C/USB4 ports, with one using Magnetic Connect for a magnetic USB-C charging cable. All USB-C ports support 140W charging, 40Gbps data transfer, and DisplayPort 2.1 output with support for up to three 4K monitors at 60Hz. It also includes HDMI 2.1b, USB-A 3.1, an SD card reader, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Wireless specs include Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth Core 5.4. The design comes in Platinum and Nightfall, with an anodized aluminum casing, a haptic touchpad, quad Omnisonic speakers with Dolby Atmos, dual Studio Mics, and a 1080p front-facing Surface Studio Camera. Who This Laptop Is Really For
With a consumer starting price of $2,599.99, the Surface Laptop Ultra is not trying to be a general-purpose Surface for everyone. It is aimed at users who can actually use local AI acceleration, CUDA support, unified memory, and strong graphics features in daily work. Microsoft highlights use cases such as local AI models, agent development, creative rendering, video work, coding, CAD, simulation, and gaming with RTX features like ray tracing, DLSS, and Reflex in supported titles. It also runs Windows 11 on an Arm-based Nvidia RTX Spark platform, so app and driver compatibility still matters, especially for specialized tools, older plug-ins, or hardware-dependent workflows. That is why the Surface Laptop Ultra is best viewed as a serious Windows alternative to the MacBook Pro idea rather than a simple MacBook Pro replacement. Its success will depend less on the spec sheet alone and more on how well Windows, Arm apps, Nvidia’s software stack, and real local AI workloads come together after shipments begin on October 16.
